Dental Crowns Northridge, CA

Wondering how often a general dentist places a dental crown? The fact that dental crowns are one of the more common types of dental restorations that patients undergo to improve their oral health makes dental crown placement a very popular option for repairing teeth. Ready to learn more?

The importance of repairing teeth

It is essential for anyone who is in need of dental repair to fix any problems they are having with their teeth as soon as possible, as this allows for the highest chances of success. When damaged teeth are not repaired in a timely manner, it is likely they will be lost, making tooth replacement necessary.

If a tooth is broken, chipped, or fractured, it could be damaged further or become infected, possibly causing one to end up losing the tooth.

What the process to place a dental crown is like

The information below includes the details on the process of dental crown placement.

The consultation appointment

The first step one needs to take when they think they are in need of one or more dental crowns is making a consultation appointment with a dentist. During the consultation, the dentist will perform a thorough examination of the patient's mouth in order to determine if they indeed are in need of a dental crown. If the dentist determines that crowns are indeed necessary, the patient will need to make two separate dental appointments in order to have crowns placed in their mouth.

The first visit

The first dental visit is the visit that prepares the tooth for the dental crown. This requires a dentist to look at the patient's digital images in order to determine how to properly prepare the tooth. Preparing the tooth does require some of the tooth's surface material to be removed, as this is necessary in order to properly place the crown. Once the tooth is fully prepared, the dentist will then take an impression of the tooth, as it is this impression that will be sent to a dental laboratory.

It often takes somewhere between two and three weeks for the custom-made dental crown to be completed. In the meantime, a temporary dental crown will be placed over the tooth, which will be removed during the second dental visit so that the permanent crown can be placed.

The second visit

The dentist will remove the temporary crown during the second visit. Next, the dentist will make sure that the permanent tooth is going to fit correctly, as well as make sure that the color of the tooth is the correct shade. Once everything is checked and approved, the permanent crown will then be carefully bonded to the tooth. The entire placement procedure tends to take about 30 minutes to complete.

Are dental crowns in your near future?

Now that the above information has been read, it is understood that crowns are commonly used to repair damaged teeth. The process of repairing teeth using crowns is also understood, making it so that those who are in need of dental crown placement know what to expect when they make an appointment to undergo the placement process.
